YOU
ARE NOT
THE
ONLY HERO
On
this day 25
years ago, McFoxx and Madvin
made the leap into the first
online console RPG on day one.
Well, sort of... they tried to
at least. But
a shipping delay at Target
forced them to day two.
|
Now here is
the interesting part: If you
look at most any online "source"
(including
Wikipedia) they
will state that PSO made
it's North American debut on
Tuesday January 30th 2001.
But this simply isn't true.
I know this because the date
of Tuesday January 23rd 2001
was marked on my calendar
and seared into my mind
as my gaming neighbor
and I hitched a ride
courtesy of my mother to
the nearest Target where
we had both pre-ordered
the game.
Alas,
when we arrived the
cashier gave us bad news
that the game had been
absent from their last
week's delivery
so they were not able to
fulfill our pre-order.
The cashier did tell us
to come back the next
day as they received
their shipments
very
early Wednesday
mornings.
Sure
enough, when we went after
school the very next day on
January 24th the game was
there and we were finally
able to bring it home. So
why then do most online
sources say
the release date was
January 30th? I have
no idea, as it
cannot be attributed
to Target breaking
the street date. If
this were the case
it would have been
expected for the
game
servers to be
empty
wastelands, but
when my neighbor
and I logged in
on January 24th
the lobbies
were bustling
with NA
players with
plenty of game
rooms open and
lively chat in
the lobbies.
If
interested, you can read more about
this day and other events
from the Golden Age of XBAND
here.
In other
news, I have added a header banner at
the top of this page to
link to our Wow Guild WebPage.
2026 certainly feels like we are "Two
Minutes to Midnight".
