XBAND IS DEAD
LONG LIVE XBAND
It had to happen
someday. The fellowship is
broken. The march of time has a way of
drifting apart all things, initially
slowly and in a gracious manner, yet
inevitably suddenly and terribly
permanent. Perhaps the greatest
challenge of any organization is to
stay relevant and extend itself past
the limits of it's mortal stewards.
Giving thought to this was probably
the greatest contributor in the
motivation for creating this website.
If not a reference for future networks
of friends to carry on the spirit of
XBAND, then it should at least serve
as a snapshot and record in time.
Thus, the following pages will recount
the history and memories of XBAND ages
past.
In November of 1994 the XBAND Video
Game Network launched for Sega
Genesis, and followed up on Super
Nintendo in June of 1995. The service
left a major impression on a group of
SoCal gamers that experienced online
play for the first time on games such
as Martio Kart, Street Fighter, Mortal
Kombat, and DOOM on their 16-Bit
consoles. A decade a head of it's
time, the network only saw a maximum
of 15,000 subscribers at it's peak and
was completely discontinued on April
30th, 1997. That group of friend have
since carried on the XBAND name in
games such as Phantasy Star Online,
EverQuest, World of Warcraft, and
others to honor those memories.
